Ned Ray McWherther was born in October 15, 1930, and he died on April 4, 2011. Ned McWherter served as the 46th Governor of Tennessee. His tenure as governor spanned between 1987 and 1995. He also served in the Tennessee House of representative as the Speaker from 1973 to 1987. He was elected Governor as a result of his exceptional work and contributions in the Legislative House. The award is renewable three times in a four-year period. Due to limited funding, the award is made extremely competitive. Tennessee established this academic scholarship program to help with the costs of required tuition, fees, room and board, textbooks, and equipment.

The Tennessee Students Assistance Corporation is given the honor of administering the award by the state of Tennessee. A student will receive a total award of $24,000 over the course of four years. Since its inception in 2002, this program has awarded over 1,000 students statewide.

Ned McWherter Scholarship Program Renewal Procedures:

The scholarship is granted for one year at a time. Each year after the initial application, a renewal application must be submitted. This allows the recipient to continue participating in the program.

Also, renewal recipients will be given first priority for scholarship awards if funds are available.

This is due to the scholarship program’s requirement that recipients meet the standards and make satisfactory progress.

With an appropriate and timely application, such prior recipient becomes eligible for scholarship renewal each year while enrolled in the program until the recipient has received a total of 12 quarters or 8 semesters of the award in a baccalaureate degree program or a maximum of 6 quarters or 4 semesters of the award in an associate degree program.

This awardee may transfer to another eligible institution, but this must be noted on the application.

Transfer recipients retain their eligibility if all of the conditions are met.

An associate degree holder may be able to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a baccalaureate degree.

The Renewal application, which must have been approved by TSAC, must be submitted by February 15th of the year preceding the scholarship year. If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline will be moved to the following business day.

However, the renewal award remains provisional until TSAC receives confirmation from the educational institution that the student continues to meet the conditions.

How do I Apply for Ned McWherter Scholarship?

  1. The applicant must develop an online portal. The online portal, on the other hand, does not complete the application.

  • This program has a medium level of competition. Scholarships with a medium level of competition are typically well known within the industry geographical dispersion
  • A national scholarship that is limited to a small group of students will also be rated as having a medium level of competition.
  • TSAC pays the program’s endowment and appropriations for each awardee on a dollar-for-dollar basis, based on the institution the awardee attends.
  • The award, on the other hand, is renewable for up to four academic years for recipients who never lose their eligibility.
  • Some recipients take part in a study abroad program. They may receive a Ned McWherter scholarship in this case, but the scholarship must be certified by an eligible Ned McWherter scholarship institution and the student must be receiving academic credits for the study abroad program from that same institution.
  • In the event that the recipient is a member of a consortium agreement, the same condition may apply.
